Many of you reach out to me asking for du'ā', ad'iyāt, azkār, or awrād that you can use to help you with your Qur'ān memorisation. A du'ā' for memory? Are there any du'ā' that you can recite to make Hifz easier? Are there any wazā'if to help you with your memory? Are there any ways to make your progress with Hifz better?
Although there is no better du'ā' than consistent action itself. There are tried and tested du'ā', ad'iyāt, azkār or awrād that you can use to help you memorise faster and easily.
The Greatest Du'ā' To Memorise The Qur'ān
The importance of du'ā' cannot be understated. It is the weapon of a believer. It is timeless and can change ones destiny. However, a believer does not make du'ā', azkār or awrād and sit still. The greatest du'ā' you can make is the one that speaks from your every limb. The greatest du'ā' you can make is the one that comes from your heart and transfers into action. Far too many of us want success and think it's as simple as saying a few words and it will become a reality. I'm afraid the modern day gurus spouting words about visualisation and manifesting whatever you want are not a reality. The greatest du'ā' is the one that is accompanied by action. We are believers, and as believers we are supposed to be the most hard working people on the planet. The people that exert themselves for good and protect the world from bad.
When you're making du'ā', ask Allāh from your heart and always accompany it with action. We are not a nation that sits and recites things, waiting for things to happen. This is why the du'ā' for guidance (Istikhārah) is a supplication where we ask Allāh to help stir us in the right direction. We cannot find that direction without taking action ourselves.
Al-Bishr al-Hāfi was once asked, 'What is the definition of a du'ā' that is accepted?'
He replied saying, "Du'ā' is to leave sins."
This is the greatest du'ā'. That, for the sake of Allāh, you leave everything that He doesn't want you to be engaged in. So much so, that whatever you want, Allāh will grant it to you. This is Taqwa.
The obedience of Allāh and His Messenger (ﷺ), the mindfulness of Allāh, having pure intentions, and living as best as you can with consistent actions be they little, is the great du'ā', wazīfah, or, wird.
Make sure you work on being the best you can be. Make every day better than before.
Make The Morning and Evening Litanies (Azkār) Your Foundation
There are many du'ā' and azkār that have been put together by our scholars from the sunnah. These should be your foundation and is a must for all Qur'ān students. These consist of litanies in the morning, in the evening, and after each salāh. These are very important and full of blessings!
Instead of me writing all of these out for you here, I will refer you to nice resources where you can already see them and begin reciting them straight away:
Litany for strengthening the memory
This is a wazīfah based on the verses of the Qur'ān related to memory. Anyone that suffers from poor memory and fails to remember things easily should recite the following litany, which has been proven to be beneficial and effective:
a'ūdhu billāhi minash shaytānir rajīm . bi-smi llāhir-raḥmāni r-raḥīm.
(I seek the protection of Allāh from Satan, the rejected, In the Name of Allāh, Most Compassionate, Ever-Merciful)
Assuredly, We alone have revealed this Glorious Admonition (the Qur’ān), and surely We alone will guard it. [Qur'ān 15:9].
(O Esteemed Beloved!) We shall teach you (in a way) that nothing will you (ever) forget. [Qur'ān, 87:6]
- Recite this 11, 40, or 100 times, blow on water, and drink it.
- Recite salawāt (salutations, prayers, and blessings) upon the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings of Allāh be upon him) 11 times before and after. By the will of Allāh, knowledge will be increased and memory will be strengthened.
- Continue this practice until the intended goal is achieved.
- If required, it should be continued after wards on the nights before Monday and Friday.
Litany to develop eagerness in reciting Qur'ān (Dhawq al-Tilāwah)
This litany uses the verses of the Qur'ān that are related to the recitation of the Qur'ān. To develop a willingness and desire to recite the Qur'ān, and to gain its light and hidden meanings (latā'if), reciting the following litany is effective:
a'ūdhu billāhi minash shaytānir rajīm . bi-smi llāhir-raḥmāni r-raḥīm.
(I seek the protection of Allāh from Satan, the rejected, In the Name of Allāh, Most Compassionate, Ever-Merciful)
Those We have given the Book follow it as it should be followed. It is they who ˹truly˺ believe in it. (2:121)
Our Lord! Raise from among them a messenger who will recite to them Your Revelations, teach them the Book and wisdom, and purify them. Indeed, You ˹alone˺ are the Almighty, All-Wise.” (2:129)
Since We have sent you a messenger from among yourselves—reciting to you Our revelations, purifying you, teaching you the Book and wisdom, and teaching you what you never knew. (2:151)
These are Allah’s revelations which We recite to you ˹O Prophet˺ in truth. And you are truly one of the messengers. (2:252)
We recite ˹all˺ this to you ˹O Prophet˺ as one of the signs and ˹as˺ a wise reminder. (3:58)
How can you disbelieve when Allah’s revelations are recited to you and His Messenger is in your midst? Whoever holds firmly to Allah is surely guided to the Straight Path. (3:101)
These are Allah’s revelations We recite to you ˹O Prophet˺ in truth. And Allah desires no injustice to ˹His˺ creation. (3:108)
Yet they are not all alike: there are some among the People of the Book who are upright, who recite Allah’s revelations throughout the night, prostrating ˹in prayer˺. (3:113)
Indeed, Allah has done the believers a ˹great˺ favour by raising a messenger from among them—reciting to them His revelations, purifying them, and teaching them the Book and wisdom. For indeed they had previously been clearly astray. (3:164)
When the Quran is recited, listen to it attentively and be silent, so you may be shown mercy. (7:204)
The ˹true˺ believers are only those whose hearts tremble at the remembrance of Allah, whose faith increases when His revelations are recited to them, and who put their trust in their Lord. (8:2)
Alif-Lãm-Ra. These are the verses of the Book, rich in wisdom. (10:1)

Alif-Lãm-Mĩm-Ra. These are the verses of the Book. What has been revealed to you ˹O Prophet˺ from your Lord is the truth, but most people do not believe. (13:1)
Alif-Lãm-Ra. These are the verses of the Book; the clear Quran. (15:1)
Say, ˹O Prophet,˺ “Believe in this ˹Quran˺, or do not. Indeed, when it is recited to those who were gifted with knowledge before it ˹was revealed˺, they fall upon their faces in prostration, (17:107)
and say, ‘Glory be to our Lord! Surely the promise of our Lord has been fulfilled.’ (17:108)
Ṭâ-Sĩn-Mĩm. These are the verses of the clear Book. (26:1-2)
and to recite the Quran.” Then whoever chooses to be guided, it is only for their own good. But whoever chooses to stray, say, ˹O Prophet,˺ “I am only a warner.” (27:92)
Ṭâ-Sĩn-Mĩm. These are the verses of the clear Book. (28:1-2)
When it is recited to them, they declare, “We believe in it. This is definitely the truth from our Lord. We had already submitted ˹even˺ before this.” (28:53)
Alif-Lãm-Mĩm. These are the verses of the Book, rich in wisdom. (31:1-2)
˹Always˺ remember what is recited in your homes of Allah’s revelations and ˹prophetic˺ wisdom. Surely Allah is Most Subtle, All-Aware. (33:34)
He is the One Who raised for the illiterate ˹people˺ a messenger from among themselves—reciting to them His revelations, purifying them, and teaching them the Book and wisdom, for indeed they had previously been clearly astray— (62:2)
Allah has indeed revealed to you a Reminder, ˹and sent˺ a messenger reciting to you Allah’s revelations, making things clear so that He may bring those who believe and do good out of darkness and into light. And whoever believes in Allah and does good will be admitted by Him into Gardens under which rivers flow, to stay there for ever and ever. Allah will have indeed granted them an excellent provision. (65:10-11)
So recite ˹in prayer˺ whatever you can from the Quran. He knows that some of you will be sick, some will be travelling throughout the land seeking Allah’s bounty, and some fighting in the cause of Allah. So recite whatever you can from it. And ˹continue to˺ perform ˹regular˺ prayers, pay alms-tax, and lend to Allah a good loan. Whatever good you send forth for yourselves, you will find it with Allah far better and more rewarding. And seek Allah’s forgiveness. Surely Allah is All-Forgiving, Most Merciful. (73:20)
So once We have recited a revelation ˹through Gabriel˺, follow its recitation ˹closely˺. (75:18)
a messenger from Allah, reciting scrolls of ˹utmost˺ purity, containing upright commandments. (98:2-3)
- All of these verses constitute one single reading in the given order
- The verses should be repeated at least three (3) times following the Fajr prayer. If this is not possible, then it should be done regularly after Maghrib or 'Ishā' prayers.
- Reciting it 7 or 11 times carries greater blessings.
- Finally, blow onto the palm of your hand, it should be rubbed on the chest, and after blowing on water it should be drunk.
- This litany should be done consecutively for at least 11 or 40 days, and if desired, it can be done longer.
Litany to create motivation for study or worship ('Ibādah)
To develop a liking, desire and motivation for worship and gain pleasure in it, reciting Surah al-Kāfirūn is useful and effective. The Prophet (ﷺ) said it is equal to one-quarter of the Qur'ān. Its recitation provides freedom from polytheism and strengthens Tawhīd. You should aim to recite it 40 or 100 times, as required. At the beginning and end of each recitation send Salawāt on the Prophet (ﷺ) and the start and end of the whole litany you should ask for forgiveness (istighfār) 11 times.
Reciting Surah al-'Asr is also powerful to create motivation in oneself, reciting it as little as 10 times a day.
In order to create motivation to study, the following is useful:
a'ūdhu billāhi minash shaytānir rajīm . bi-smi llāhir-raḥmāni r-raḥīm.
(I seek the protection of Allāh from Satan, the rejected, In the Name of Allāh, Most Compassionate, Ever-Merciful)
Indeed, Allah has done the believers a ˹great˺ favour by raising a messenger from among them—reciting to them His revelations, purifying them, and teaching them the Book and wisdom. For indeed they had previously been clearly astray. (3:164)

By Mount Ṭûr! And by the Book written, on open pages ˹for all to read˺! And by the ˹Sacred˺ House frequently visited! (52:1-4)
Nũn. By the pen and what everyone writes! (68:1)
- Read this 11 or 40 times and then blow into water and drink it.
- Recite salawāt (salutations, prayers, and blessings) upon the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allāh be upon him) 11 times before and after. By the will of Allāh, one will be motivated to study.
- You can continue the litany until the intended goal is achieved.
- If requires, it should be continued afterwards on the nights before Monday and Friday.
Du'ā' when you can't memorise anything from the Qur'ān

Abdullāh Ibn Abi Awfa reported: A man came to the Prophet (ﷺ), and he said, “I cannot memorise anything from the Qur’an, so teach me what will suffice me.”
The Prophet (ﷺ) said, “Say: Glory be to Allāh, all praise is due to Allah, there is no God but Allāh, Allah is greater, and there is no power or might but in Allāh the Exalted, the Almighty.”
The man said, “O Messenger of Allāh (ﷺ), these words are for Allāh, but what is for me?”
The Holy Prophet (ﷺ) said, “Say: O Allāh, have mercy on me, provide for me, forgive me, and guide me.”

Du'ā' for help in memorising the Qur'ān
Someone once asked the Syrian teacher and scholar, Shaykh Sāmir al-Nass for some help with memorising the Qur’ān. He told him to read the following supplication three times before and after reading the Qur’ān. He also said that he is convinced that is why he has been able to memorise the Qur’ān.
Allāhumma nawwir bi kitābika absarina, wa atliq bi hi alsinatanā, washrah bi hi sudooranā, wasta’mil bi hi ajsādana, bi hawlika wa quwwatika, fa innahu lā hawla wa la quwwata illā bika yā arhama rāhimīn
O Allāh, illuminate our sights by Your book, loosen our tongues by it, expand our chests by it and use our bodies in it, through Your movement and power for there is no movement and power except with You, O most merciful of those who show mercy.
Here's another:
“O Allah, O Rahman, by Your glory and the light of Your Countenance,
to make my heart constant in remembering Your Book as You taught me,
and grant me that I recite it in the manner that will make You pleased with me.
O Allah, O Rahman, by Your glory and the light of Your Countenance,
to enlighten my sight with Your Book, and make my tongue free with it,
and to relieve with it my heart from all problems, and to expand my chest with it."
Reciting the āyah:
This is a recitation that is tried and tested by scholars that I have heard from firsthand. That is to recite:
إِنَّا نَحْنُ نَزَّلْنَا الذِّكْرَ وَإِنَّا لَهُ لَحَافِظُونَ x 100 times daily, or more by doing 100 after every salāh.
Reciting the āyah:
(21:79) x 70 times daily, or more by doing 70 after every salāh.

3 Surah of the Qur'ān that stimulates memory and treats forgetfulness
Some scholars have mentioned that there are three suwar in the Qur'ān that will improve your memory and treat forgetfulness if they are recited with regularity and are memorised. These surah carry a common feature - they contain verses that are repeated. Those are:
- al-Qamar (contains a verse is repeated 4 times)
- ar-Rahman (contains a verse that is repeated 31 times)
- al-Mursalāt (contains a verse that is repeated 10 times)
Some say repeating these according to the number of times the repeated verses appear is also effective.
Dua for Memorizing Quran
O Allah, I beseech You for Your favour and generosity to grace me with the Hifz of the Quran in my heart, provide me with the ability to act upon it, to understand it, and fulfil its obligations excellently.
O Allah, I ask You to ease for me the memorisation of the Noble Quran, to facilitate my comprehension of the verses of this magnificent book, and to make me among the diligent hardworking memorisers.
O Allah, I pray that You use me and not replace me, that You turn towards me and forgive me, that You honour me with the Hifz of Your Noble Book, that You facilitate this for me and assist me in it, O my God and my Master.
O Allah, my aspiration to complete the memorisation and understanding of the Noble Quran grows in my heart day by day. I ask You, my Master, to ease its memorsation for me, grant me patience in reviewing it, strength in retaining it, and quickness in comprehension.
O Allah, make easy for me the memorisation and understanding of the Quran, aid me in learning its recitation with proper tajweed, make me among those who act upon it, and let it be a proof for me on the Day of Judgment.
O Allah, preserve us with the Quran as You preserve it with the angels, use us, occupy us, and suffice us with it over anyone else for the sake of Your Noble Countenance. And to You belongs all praise and gratitude.
O Allah, Originator of the heavens and the earth, Possessor of Majesty, Honour, and Might that cannot be breached: I ask You, O Allah, O Merciful, by Your Glory and the Light of Your Countenance, to make my heart adhere to the preservation of Your Book as You have taught me, and grant me the ability to recite it in a manner that pleases You.
O Allah, have mercy on me by enabling me to abandon sins for as long as You keep me alive, and have mercy on me to not concern myself with what does not matter to me, and grant me the grace of discernment in what pleases You.
O Allah, protect us with the Quran as the angels are protected, use us, occupy us, and make us independent of others through it for Your Noble Countenance. And to You belongs all praise and gratitude, more and dearer to You and to us than anything, equivalent to the number of Your creation, the satisfaction of Your Self, the weight of Your Throne, and the ink of Your words.
O Allah, occupy us and suffice us with Your Quran, Your glorification, Your remembrance, Your unification, Your praise, and Your gratitude, away from everything else.
O Allah, do not sever the Quran from our hearts or our homes, and make it an inheritance for us in our children after us.
I will add to the content over time, in shā' Allāh, so you may visit from time to time.
